Server and rack removal: what the building imposes on the schedule

Rack count is the number everyone quotes. Access is the number that decides the schedule.

What the building imposes

  • Freight elevator capacity and hours. A single elevator shared with other tenants can halve daily throughput.
  • Floor loading. Raised floors, tile ratings and the route to the elevator constrain how much can move at once.
  • Dock windows. Many buildings allow loading only outside business hours, which turns a day shift into a night operation.
  • Corridor geometry. Door widths and turns decide whether racks roll out whole or get stripped in place.
  • Site rules. Insurance certificates, badging, escorts, union labor requirements.

None of these appear in a rack count, and all of them appear in a quote. This is the single biggest reason two proposals for the same room differ.

Whole racks or stripped in place

Rolling a populated rack out intact is fast, but demands clearances and floor ratings that many buildings do not have. Stripping in place is slower and generates more handling, but it fits through ordinary doors and elevators.

The decision is made by the building, not by preference. A provider who has not walked the route cannot tell you which applies.

What a site walk should produce

  1. A measured route from the room to the dock, with pinch points noted.
  2. Confirmed elevator dimensions, capacity and available hours.
  3. The staging area, and how long assets may remain there.
  4. Building requirements: badging, escorts, insurance, working hours.
  5. A realistic daily throughput, from which the schedule is derived.

Describe the site

Location, footprint and access constraints. Providers who cover the area can then tell you what is actually feasible.
